POL 325 European Politics

A study of the politics of European states in comparative perspective. More so than any other region of the contemporary world, the domestic politics of European states must be considered in the context of regional integration. To that end, emphasis is given to the puzzles and problems of regional integration that have accompanied the development of the European Union. Attention is given to theories of state sovereignty, the institutional choices embodied in the EU, the organization’s relative successes and failures across issue areas, the heterogeneity of state preferences, and the abiding significance of national and sub-national politics in the European landscape.
