COS 270 Computing and the Future of Bias

Computing has had a reputation as a field that is modern, progressive, even liberating. However, as we increasingly rely on algorithms to make decisions in fields from lending to sentencing, we increasingly see bias being made efficient, rather than reduced. In addition, there is an inability of the computing industry to diversify its workforce. While these problems surprise the world, the idea of broken people, dealing with a broken world, leading to more brokenness should not surprise us as Christians. All is not lost. The computing industry has developed ideas such as unconscious bias training and has a leading role in providing custom solutions for those with many types of disabilities. Prerequisite(s): ENG 111 . 3 hour(s). DIV
