MAT 131 College Algebra I


The course will cover fundamental concepts of algebra such as simplifying algebraic, rational, and radical expressions and adding, multiplying, and factoring polynomials; as well as complex numbers and the solution of various types of equations and inequalities, including linear equations and inequalities in one variable, absolute value equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, rational equations, and radical equations. Designed for those who have had two years of high school algebra, but need more depth in algebraic topics to prepare for enrollment in MAT 142 , MAT 144 , STA 253 , or STA 254 . Prerequisite(s): Placement level 1. This course fulfills the core mathematics requirement. Credit will not be given for both MAT 131 and MAT 141 , and the course is not open to students with credit for any mathematics course (or equivalent) numbered 141 or higher unless special permission is granted by the instructor. 3 hour(s).
